Flushing High School

About

Flushing High School is located at 35-01 Union Street Flushing, NY and it provides for education for grades 9-12 in Queens County. Flushing High School which is the oldest public high school in the City of New York. The English Department at Flushing High School requires that all students read at least two books during the summer. In 1848, the Board of Education was organized. The introductory statement to the rules of the board was: "Obedience to the laws of the school lays a sure foundation of obedience to the laws of the country." An example of the laws was: "The pupils are required to clean their shoes, and go in and out with as little noise as possible. Running, loud talking scuffling, whistling, and so forth are at all times prohibited."

Flushing School is devoted to academic excellence as well as to the cultivation and understanding of the individual strengths and differences of the members of the school community. It is our mission to encourage democratic values and community service; to promote creativity and critical thinking; to promote high expectations for all students; to promote self-awareness and to foster career development.

This New York School has opened its doors to the young people of Queens for the past 159 years. Their student body mirrors the city's many varied ethnic backgrounds and cultures as well as socio-economic levels, celebrating a central theme: "A quality education is the foundation to a secure, prosperous and exciting future! They believe that we can succeed in surpassing the high expectations set before us." The staff firmly believes that our role is to nurture, to shape and develop the minds and bodies of students in a safe and harmonious environment. Their students, the learners of today, will be prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
