Rome City Schools

Rome City School District is located at 112 East Thomas Street Rome, NY and grades K-12 attend school in this district. Rome City Schools strive to nurture, challenge, and inspire each learner. Through a grant from the New York State Department of Transportation, Rome City School District students will be offered the chance to enroll in the "Youth Construction Initiative Program". At no cost to the district, students interested in the field of construction will participate in coursework, job training, and field placements with local construction firms leading to paid internships and job placements upon graduation. Through the guidance of a full-time coordinator and mentor paid by the DOT, this program has been very successful in districts such as Newburgh, Albany City and Utica.

Character Education through Adventure Learning (CEAL) is a program initiated last year through which our high school students learn leadership skills, teamwork and resourcefulness. After successful completion of required classroom work and team activities out on the ropes course, student leaders under the direction of teacher, Melissa O'Rourke work in after-school programs with children at Fort Stanwix and Gansevoort Schools. The district and City of Rome Weed and Seed Initiative jointly fund the program. Due to the success of the program, CEAL is being featured at the National Weed and Seed Conference held in Detroit, Michigan this summer.

In addition to these programs, new teachers have been hired to expand Academic Intervention Services in an effort to continue improvements in our students' four year graduation rate. Teams of teachers working with both incoming freshman and our sophomores will share responsibility for the same group of students, getting to know them well, sharing ways to meet their needs and providing a consistent instructional plan across all subjects.
